What Are Lateral Flow Tests?

Lateral flow tests (LFTs), also known as rapid antigen tests, are quick COVID-19 tests that detect viral proteins from a nose and throat swab. Unlike PCR tests which require laboratory processing, LFTs provide results in 15-30 minutes at home. They are particularly useful for detecting COVID-19 when you have symptoms or need rapid results for travel, work, events, or visiting vulnerable people. While less sensitive than PCR tests, LFTs are highly accurate at detecting COVID-19 when you're most infectious, making them ideal for regular testing and early detection.

How Lateral Flow Tests Work

Test Process

1. Take a swab from your throat and both nostrils using the provided swab stick. 2. Insert the swab into the extraction tube containing liquid buffer solution and mix thoroughly. 3. Squeeze drops of the liquid onto the test strip or cassette. 4. Wait 15-30 minutes for results to develop. 5. Read results according to instructions - one line (negative), two lines (positive), no lines or control line missing (invalid test).

Accuracy and Reliability

LFTs are approximately 70-80% accurate overall, but up to 95% accurate when you have symptoms and high viral load (when you're most infectious). False negatives can occur in early infection or if not performed correctly. If you have COVID-19 symptoms but test negative, consider a PCR test or retest after 24-48 hours. False positives are rare (less than 1%). Always follow up a positive LFT with a confirmatory PCR test if required for official purposes.

When to Use Lateral Flow Tests

Use LFTs when you have COVID-19 symptoms (fever, continuous cough, loss of taste/smell, fatigue, sore throat, headache) for rapid initial testing. They're ideal before attending events, gatherings, or visiting vulnerable people to reduce transmission risk. Many workplaces, schools, and care settings require regular LFT screening. LFTs are useful before and during travel as some destinations accept lateral flow results. Use them for peace of mind testing if you've been exposed to COVID-19 or are in high-risk settings. For regular monitoring if you're in a high-exposure occupation (healthcare, education, customer-facing roles), LFTs provide convenient frequent testing.

Buying Lateral Flow Tests from Pharmacies

While free NHS lateral flow tests are no longer routinely available (ended April 2022 except for specific eligible groups), LFTs can be purchased from most pharmacies across the UK. Prices typically range from £2-5 per single test, £10-15 for packs of 5, and £15-25 for packs of 7-10 tests. Bulk buying usually offers better value. Many pharmacies stock multiple brands including BinaxNOW, Flowflex, Healgen, Orient Gene, and Acon. All pharmacy-sold LFTs must be CE marked or MHRA approved, ensuring quality and accuracy. Check with your local pharmacy for current stock and pricing. Some pharmacies offer online ordering with home delivery or click-and-collect services for convenience.

Free NHS Lateral Flow Tests

Free NHS lateral flow tests are currently available only for specific groups: NHS and adult social care staff, care home residents and staff, individuals visiting care home residents, patients receiving NHS-funded care, people eligible for COVID-19 treatments (immunosuppressed, certain medical conditions), and certain other specific circumstances as determined by NHS England. If you fall into an eligible category, you can order free tests through NHS online services or collect them from designated pharmacies and collection points. For most of the general public, LFTs must now be purchased. Check NHS.uk for the latest eligibility criteria and ordering information.

How to Use Your Lateral Flow Test Correctly

For accurate results, wash your hands thoroughly before testing. Read all instructions carefully before starting. Ensure tests and swabs are at room temperature. For throat swab, open mouth wide and swab the back of throat and tonsils (avoid tongue to prevent gagging). For nasal swabs, insert swab 2-2.5cm into each nostril and rotate 10-15 times. Don't eat, drink, smoke, or brush teeth for 30 minutes before testing to avoid contamination. Use tests before their expiry date and store according to instructions. Time the test precisely - reading results too early or too late can give inaccurate results. Take a photo of the result for your records, especially if required for travel or work. If unsure about how to perform the test, ask your pharmacist for a demonstration or watch instructional videos.

What to Do If You Test Positive

If your lateral flow test is positive, you likely have COVID-19. While legal isolation requirements have been removed in England, public health advice recommends: try to stay at home and avoid contact with others for at least 5 days if you have a positive test or symptoms. Avoid contact with vulnerable people, especially those at higher risk of severe COVID-19. Inform close contacts so they can take precautions and consider testing. Follow NHS guidance on managing symptoms at home (rest, fluids, paracetamol for fever). Consider a PCR test if confirmation is needed for work, insurance, or official purposes. If you're eligible for COVID-19 treatments (immunosuppressed, certain conditions), contact your GP or NHS 111 urgently. Seek medical help immediately if you develop severe symptoms (difficulty breathing, chest pain, confusion, unable to stay awake).

Lateral Flow Tests vs PCR Tests

Lateral flow tests provide results in 15-30 minutes at home, while PCR tests require laboratory processing (24-72 hours typically). LFTs cost £2-25 for home use, while PCR tests are free on NHS if symptomatic or eligible, or £50-200 privately for travel. LFTs are 70-95% accurate depending on viral load, PCR tests are 95-98% accurate (gold standard). LFTs are best for rapid screening and detecting when you're most infectious, while PCR tests are better for early infection detection, confirmation of LFT results, and official documentation needs. Use LFTs for regular screening, quick checks, and peace of mind. Use PCR tests when you have symptoms but negative LFT, for travel if PCR specifically required, for official confirmation, or if you're at high risk and need accurate early detection.
