Data Sources & Methodology

How we collect, validate and maintain pharmacy listings across the UK

Where Our Data Comes From

Pharmacy details compiled from official NHS and regulator listings. Last refreshed: September 2026.

The directory currently lists 11,000+ pharmacies across England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. Every listing comes from the official pharmaceutical lists maintained by NHS organisations and health regulators in each nation — the same registers that pharmacies are legally required to appear on to dispense NHS prescriptions.

We do not accept user-submitted pharmacy listings. All pharmacy data is sourced from these official registers to ensure accuracy and legitimacy.

What Information We Collect

For each pharmacy, we collect the following information from the official pharmaceutical lists:

  • Pharmacy name: The registered trading name from the official list
  • Address and postcode: The pharmacy's registered premises address
  • Phone number: Where published in the official data
  • Opening hours: Weekly opening hours where published (England and Scotland)
  • ODS code or equivalent: The unique identifier from the national register
  • Contract type: E.g. community pharmacy, distance-selling (online-only)

Pharmacy locations (latitude and longitude) are derived from postcodes using postcodes.io, which provides postcode data under open licences. Contains National Statistics data © Crown copyright and database right 2025. Contains NRS data © Crown copyright and database right 2025.

How Often Data Is Updated

Periodic imports from official sources

We periodically import the latest pharmaceutical lists from each nation's official source. The frequency depends on how often each source publishes updates — typically quarterly for most nations, though this varies.

Each pharmacy listing page shows when that pharmacy's details were last updated from the official source. You can use this date to judge how current the information is.

Important: Opening hours, phone numbers and services can change between our imports, particularly around bank holidays and during staff shortages. We always recommend calling ahead if you need a pharmacy urgently or outside normal hours.

Handling Duplicates & Closed Pharmacies

Duplicate listings

When the same pharmacy appears under multiple names or at slightly different addresses in our data, we identify the duplicates and redirect alternative URLs to a single primary listing. This keeps the directory clean and ensures you always see the most complete information.

Closed pharmacies

When a pharmacy is absent from a fresh import of its nation's official list, we mark it as closed. The listing page remains accessible with a closure notice and shows the nearest alternative pharmacies, but the page is removed from search engine indexing to avoid sending people to a pharmacy that no longer exists.

We do not automatically close listings for pharmacies with hospital, veterinary, or online-only names even when they are temporarily absent from an import, as these pharmacies sometimes appear and disappear from official lists due to administrative reasons rather than actual closures.

Known Limitations

  • Opening hours may not reflect temporary changes (bank holidays, staff shortages, emergency closures). Always call ahead if visiting outside normal hours.
  • Phone numbers may change between imports. If a number doesn't work, try searching online or checking NHS.uk.
  • Services offered are limited to what the official data includes. Most pharmacies offer additional services not listed in the national registers.
  • New pharmacies may not appear immediately — they are added when we next import the updated pharmaceutical list.
  • Wales and Northern Ireland official sources do not publish opening hours, so many listings in these nations show "opening hours not listed".

Reporting Corrections

If you spot an error in a pharmacy listing — incorrect hours, a wrong phone number, or a pharmacy that has closed — please let us know via our contact form. You can also use the "Report a correction" link on any pharmacy page.

We review every correction request. When we can verify the change (e.g. by checking the pharmacy's own website or the latest official register), we update the listing. Because our data comes from official sources, some corrections may only be permanent once they appear in the next official import.

Editorial Policy

Chemist Near Me is an independent directory. We are not affiliated with any pharmacy chain, NHS body, or healthcare provider. We have no commercial relationship with the pharmacies listed beyond optional paid featured placement (which is clearly labelled).

We do not provide medical advice. The information on this site is for finding a pharmacy only. If you need medical advice, contact your GP, call NHS 111, or in an emergency call 999. Pharmacies can provide professional advice about medicines and minor ailments, but always contact them directly rather than relying solely on information in this directory.

Our service information pages (e.g. Pharmacy First, flu vaccinations) describe services that are commonly offered by UK pharmacies. This information is general guidance — not every pharmacy offers every service, and you should always check with the pharmacy directly before visiting.
